Argentine President Javier Milei has ordered his country to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing deep differences with the U.N. agency, a presidential spokesman said Wednesday.
Milei's actions are in line with those of his ally, US President Donald Trump, who began the process of withdrawing the US from the WHO with an instruction on his first day back in office.
Argentina's decision was based on "profound disagreements in health management, especially during the (COVID-19) pandemic," spokesman Manuel Adorni told a news conference in Buenos Aires. He said WHO guidelines at the time had led to the largest lockdown "in the history of humanity."
He also considered WHO not independent and influenced by the politics of several countries. He did not specify which countries.
Argentina will not allow international organizations to interfere in the country's sovereignty and "much less in our health," Adorni added.
WHO is the specialized health agency of the United Nations and is the only organization mandated to coordinate the global response to acute health crises, particularly emerging disease outbreaks and ongoing threats including Ebola, AIDS and mpox
